Your Own Blog or Website is Essential!
As a freelance writer, it is essential to have your own site or blog. This is especially true if your goal is to write web content or blogs. People who are looking for web writers are going to want to see samples of web-specific work. Even people who are looking for copywriters, ghostwriters, business writers, ect., are looking for writers on the internet. If you don’t have a website, you can expect to lose a lot of work. Plus, starting your own blog or web site is free and reletively simple.
- Find a Host: A host is where your site is stored and where is can be found. Obviously, for my writing blog, I chose Today.com. For a personal blog about my daughter, I chose Blogger.com. I also have a writing web site. For this, I chose Googlepages.com.
- Choose a Domain Name: If you want to, buying your own domain name only costs about $10 a year. GoDaddy is a popular site for registering names. Choose a domain name that is professional and easy to remember. Don’t worry about being witty or clever.
- Keep it Simple: Your site does not have to be complex or graphics intensive to show off your writing ability. Strive to keep it simple. A home page, links to writing samples, your resume, and contact info will give prospective employers all of the information that they need.
- Promote Your Writing: Once your website or blog is up and running, be sure to include the web address on your emails, letterhead, and business cards. Register your address with different search engines (such as Google and Yahoo). You can also use SubmitExpress, which registers your site with several different search engines for free.
