Finding Freelance Work

Published by cherieb at 3:14 pm under Writing Jobs, freelance writing Edit This

As a freelance writer, finding assignments can be a job unto itself.  When you are looking and applying for jobs, make sure you are qualified for the position.  You also need to make sure that you show a prospective employer that you are qualified.

  1. Prepare and educate yourself about the different types of writing and the different types of jobs that are available.  There are jobs available in copywriting, freelance writing, proofreading and editing.  You need to understand the differences and what you are qualified for.
  2. Have samples of your work available.  Most employers are going to want to see examples of your best work.  Have a portfolio of samples at hand and make sure that you keep the portfolio updated.
  3. Strive for repeat business.  If you exceed your customers’ expectation, they will offer you work in the future.  They will also be more likely to recommend you to other clients.  Working to make your customers happy will open more job opportunities in the future.

It will take time to build your reputation and get to the point that you can support yourself exclusively with your writing.  Like with any home business, the key is to be patient and work hard.  If you are not ready to take the step to a full-time freelance career, consider starting your freelance writing business on a part-time basis.
